The plastic toothbrush is a commonly found item on the beach. If you consider that we all change our toothbrush every three months, the number of toothbrushes we use and then discard is staggering. All this, while plastic toothbrushes are not recyclable. The first plastic toothbrush was produced in 1930, during the early days of the plastic revolution. That means that every toothbrush produced in 1930 that was not incinerated can still be found somewhere as waste.
Fortunately, there’s a movement of manufacturers and people wondering whether we can brush our teeth without plastic. Before the plastic revolution, toothbrushes were also made from natural materials, so it has long been proven that it can be done.
Bamboo toothbrushes clean your teeth just as well as plastic toothbrushes do, but they do not contribute to the growing plastic soup. If your bamboo toothbrush does accidentally end up in nature, it is largely biodegradable.
Although we are not quite there yet! The bristles of the toothbrushes are still made of organic nylon (free from BPA and petroleum). Bioplastic is also a form of plastic, which we are not in favour of, mainly because it is difficult to recycle and does not break down well in nature. The only biodegradable material available is pig hair. We, the producer and Zo Zero, don’t consider this a viable option because we love animals. We believe organic nylon is currently the best available product.
Did you know that bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world? There are more than 1,500 species of bamboo. At Zo Zero, you will find toothbrushes made from Moso bamboo, a species that is not eaten by pandas. A great advantage of bamboo is that no artificial irrigation, pesticides and other chemicals are used in the bamboo cultivation for the toothbrushes.
Bamboo may look like wood, but it is a type of grass that grows at the speed of light. It absorbs dioxide and gives off more oxygen than many types of trees. The production of bamboo leaves little residual waste. The roots are used as food, the thicker pieces for making furniture, and the smaller pieces for producing items like toothbrushes and chopsticks. Read all about it in The Bamboo Brush Society's blog.
